POP, SMTP, तथा IMAP ई-मेल प्रोटोकॉल के उदाहरण है-

(i) SMTP सिम्पल मेल ट्रांसफर प्रोटोकॉल का संक्षिप्त रूप है SMTP प्रोटोकॉल का मुख्य उद्देश्य सर्वरों के मध्य संचार नियम स्थापित करना हैं। SMTP के माध्यम से ही हम इंटरनेट पर एक-दूसरे को मेल भेज तथा रिसीव कर सकते हैं।

■ यह एक एप्लीकेशन लेयर प्रोटोकॉल है तथा इसका पोर्ट संख्या 25 है

(ii) POP का अर्थ Post office Protocol है जो ई-मेल प्राप्त करने तथा भेजने में सहायक होता है। यह प्रोटोकॉल ई-मेल सर्वर से मेल को पुनः प्राप्त ( retirve) करने का कार्य करता है। इसका नवीनतम संस्करण POP3 है ।

(iii) IMAP, इंटरनेट मैसेज एक्सेस प्रोटोकॉल का संक्षिप्त रूप है। यह एक एप्लीकेशन लेयर प्रोटोकॉल है जिसका उपयोग मेल सर्वर से मेल रिसीव करने के लिए किया जाता है। IMAP प्रोटोकॉल का उपयोग POP3 की तरह मेल सर्वर से मेल को रिट्राइव करने के लिए किया जाता है।
