The UPSC Forest Service Examination, officially known as the Indian Forest Service (IFoS) Examination, is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission to recruit officers for the prestigious Indian Forest Service. It is one of the three All India Services, alongside the IAS and IPS. The exam is designed to select candidates responsible for managing the country’s forests, wildlife, and natural resources.
The selection process consists of three stages: the Preliminary Examination (shared with the Civil Services Examination), the Main Examination (with specialized science-based subjects), and the Personality Test (Interview). Candidates must have a background in science, agriculture, forestry, or engineering to be eligible.
IFoS officers play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, climate change mitigation, and sustainable development. The examination is highly competitive and demands strong conceptual knowledge, analytical ability, and dedication toward environmental service and national development.

Preparation Tips
- Master the Optional Subjects: Since these account for 800 marks, select subjects you are comfortable with. Note that certain combinations are prohibited (e.g., Agriculture and Forestry, or two Engineering subjects). The syllabus for optionals is generally at the Honours degree level.
- Focus on Environmental Ecology: Given the nature of the service, the Preliminary exam heavily emphasizes environmental ecology, biodiversity, and climate change. Thoroughly study these “general issues” that do not require specialization for the Prelims.
- Refine English Writing Skills: All Main exam papers must be in English. Practice writing orderly, effective, and exact expressions with an economy of words, as credit is given for precision rather than “superficial knowledge”.
- Scientific Accuracy: For science and engineering papers, ensure you are comfortable using SI units and the international form of Indian numerals. You are allowed to use non-programmable scientific calculators for conventional (Main) papers.
- Stay Updated on Current Events: Both the Preliminary and General Knowledge (Main) papers require a strong grasp of current events of national and international importance.
- Personality and Physical Fitness: The interview assesses your “topographical sense” and “mental and physical energy”. Additionally, you must meet strict medical and physical standards as per the 2026 rules.
