Preparation Tips

  • Complete Your O.T.R. Immediately: Before you even begin studying, secure your administration tasks. It is absolutely mandatory to obtain your One Time Registration (O.T.R.) number from the commission’s website 72 hours before submitting your online application. Do not leave this until the final week.
  • Prioritize UP-Specific General Knowledge: The Preliminary Examination includes 30 questions on General Studies. The official syllabus explicitly states that candidates are expected to have general awareness of the topics with a special reference to Uttar Pradesh. Dedicate specific study hours to UP’s local history, geography, and current economic developments.
  • Develop a Strategy for Negative Marking: The Prelims feature a strict penalty where one-third (0.33) of the marks assigned to a question are deducted for every incorrect answer. When taking mock tests, practice intelligent elimination. If a question is left blank, there is no penalty, so learn when to skip a question rather than guessing blindly.
  • Master the Art of Time-Bound Answer Writing: The Main Examination is purely conventional and tests your ability to write clearly and concisely. You will need to write 10 short answers (125 words each) and 10 long answers (200 words each) in exactly 3 hours. Practice writing out your subject’s core concepts by setting a strict timer. Focus on structuring your answers with clear introductions, core arguments, and sharp conclusions.
  • Deep Dive into Your Optional Subject: The entire Main Examination and 75% of your Preliminary Exam (90 out of 120 questions) revolve around your specific academic discipline. This means your post-graduate-level knowledge must be exceptionally polished. Download the specific, government-approved syllabus for your subject and cover every unit comprehensively.
  • Organize Your Documentation Early: If you qualify for the Main Examination, you will be required to send hard copies of your online application along with self-attested copies of all mark sheets and certificates to support your eligibility and category claims. Gather your High School certificate (used for Date of Birth verification), Master’s degree (minimum 55% marks required), and NET/SLET/SET or Ph.D. certificates well in advance.
