RRB Lab Assistants: Preparation Tips

  • Prioritize the Professional Ability Section: With 50 out of 100 questions dedicated to your core subjects, this is the make-or-break section. You must go beyond your standard 12th-grade textbooks. Focus specifically on industrial material testing, metallurgy basics, and electroplating. Gather diploma-level notes on Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and mechanical testing machines, as these carry significant weight.
  • Revise 10th Standard Science: Do not overlook the 10-mark General Science section. Brush up on basic CBSE 10th standard Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences. Since you already have a science background, this should be quick, but ensure your foundational concepts are crystal clear to secure easy marks.
  • Master Time Management: You have 90 minutes to solve 100 questions. This gives you less than a minute per question. Practice solving mathematical and reasoning problems quickly. Learn shortcut techniques for fractions, percentages, and data interpretation.
  • Navigate the Negative Marking: The 1/3rd negative marking penalty is harsh. Guesswork will destroy your score. Practice the art of skipping questions you do not know. During mock tests, analyze how many marks you are losing to incorrect guesses and actively work to reduce that number.
  • Take Online Mock Tests: The actual exam is a Computer Based Test (CBT). Familiarize yourself with the digital interface by taking online mock tests. The RRB website will also provide mock/practice tests to help you understand the exam environment. Utilize these to build your stamina and screen-reading speed.
