A job with the Government of India is a dream for many people. These jobs are respected and offer a good life. One such important job is that of an Inspector (Examiner) in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs, or CBIC. This is a Group ‘B’ post, which means it is a position with significant responsibilities.

To get this job, you must pass a test called the SSC CGL Examination. This test is held by the Staff Selection Commission, also known as the SSC. The SSC is a government body that chooses skilled people for various government jobs.

An Inspector (Examiner) has a very interesting and important role. Their main work is at seaports and airports. They check the goods that are coming into our country (imports) and going out of our country (exports). They make sure that the right amount of tax, called customs duty, is paid on these goods. This is very important for the country’s money and safety. They check if people are following the laws and not bringing in or sending out illegal items.

Educational Qualification

To apply for the Inspector (Examiner) post, you must have a Bachelor's Degree.

  • A Bachelor's Degree is a college degree you get after finishing school. It can be in any subject, like Arts, Science, Commerce, or Engineering.
  • The degree must be from a university that is recognized by the government.
  • If you are in the final year of your degree, you can still apply. However, you must have your degree result and certificate by the date of 01-08-2025.

Your age is also very important.

  • For the Inspector (Examiner) post, your age should be between 18 and 30 years 

The government gives some relaxation in the upper age limit for people from certain categories. This means they can be older than 30 and still apply.

How to Apply

The application process is done online on the SSC website (ssc.gov.in). It has two main parts.

Part 1: One-Time Registration (OTR): If you are a new user, you first need to register on the SSC website. This is a one-time process.

  1. Go to the official SSC website: https://ssc.gov.in.
  2. Click on the 'Login or Register' button.
  3. Click on 'Register Now'.
  4. Fill in your basic details like your name, parents' names, date of birth, mobile number, and email address. Be very careful and fill everything exactly as it is on your 10th-grade certificate.
  5. Create a password for your account.
  6. Provide additional details like your category, nationality, and address.
  7. Agree to the declaration and submit the form. You will get a Registration Number and Password on your mobile number and email.

Part 2: Filling the Application Form: Once your OTR is done, you can apply for the CGL exam.

  1. Log in to the SSC website with your Registration Number and password.
  2. Find the link for 'Combined Graduate Level Examination, 2025' and click 'Apply'.
  3. Your details from the OTR form will be automatically filled. Check them.
  4. Enter your educational qualifications.
  5. Choose three examination centers where you want to take the test.
  6. Capture a live photograph of yourself using your computer's webcam or your phone. Your face should be clear, and you should not be wearing a cap or glasses.
  7. Upload a scanned copy of your signature.
  8. Review your application carefully using the 'Preview' option.
  9. If you are not exempt, pay the application fee online.
  10. Submit your final application. It is a good idea to save a copy or take a printout for your records.

SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner Officer) Post : Selection Process

The selection process has multiple stages. You need to clear each stage to get the job.

  • Stage 1: Tier-I Examination: First, everyone who applies has to take the Tier-I exam. This is a computer-based test with multiple-choice questions. It is a qualifying exam, which means you need to score minimum marks to be selected for the next stage.
  • Stage 2: Tier-II Examination: Candidates who pass Tier-I will be called for the Tier-II exam. This is the main exam, and the marks scored here are most important for the final selection. This is also a computer-based test.
  • Stage 3: Physical and Medical Tests: The Inspector (Examiner) post requires you to be physically fit. The department will conduct physical standard tests (like checking height and chest) and a medical examination to ensure you are healthy enough for the job.
  • Stage 4: Document Verification: After the final result is declared, the selected candidates are called for Document Verification. You have to show all your original documents like your degree certificate, caste certificate, and ID proof to the department you have been selected for (CBIC).

This is a one-hour computer-based test with Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ). For every wrong answer, 0.50 marks will be cut.

This is the main exam, consisting of one paper (Paper-I) held in two sessions on the same day. There is a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Sections I, II, and III.

Final selection is based on the total marks scored in Section-I and Section-II of Paper-I in the Tier-II exam.

Tier-I Syllabus

  • General Intelligence and Reasoning: This tests your thinking ability. Topics include puzzles, number series, coding-decoding, and problem-solving.
  • General Awareness: This includes questions on History, Geography, Indian Constitution, Economics, Science, and Current Affairs (what is happening in the world).
  • Quantitative Aptitude: This is your maths test. Topics include Percentage, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry. The level is of 10th grade.
  • English Comprehension: This tests your knowledge of the English language. Topics include vocabulary (word meanings), grammar, sentence correction, and reading comprehension (understanding passages).

Tier-II Syllabus

The syllabus is similar to Tier-I but more advanced.

  • Mathematical Abilities: This includes topics from Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, Statistics, and Probability.
  • Reasoning and General Intelligence: This includes both verbal and non-verbal reasoning topics like series, analogy, classification, and critical thinking.
  • English Language and Comprehension: This has a greater focus on vocabulary, grammar rules, reading comprehension passages, jumbled sentences, and active/passive voice.
  • General Awareness: The syllabus is the same as Tier-I, but the questions may be more detailed.
  • Computer Knowledge: This covers basics like the parts of a computer, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), internet, email, and computer security.

SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner Officer) Post : Result

The result of the examination is also declared online on the SSC website.

  • Tier-I Result: After the Tier-I exam is over, the SSC will declare the result. A list of candidates who have passed and are selected for Tier-II will be published.
  • Final Result: The final result is declared after the Tier-II exam is completed. A merit list is prepared based on the marks scored by candidates in Tier-II.
  • Candidates who make it to the final merit list and clear the document verification and medical tests are offered the job.
  • The SSC will also release the cut-off marks, which are the minimum marks needed to pass the exam for different categories.

SSC CGL Inspector (Examiner Officer) Post : Admit Card

The Admit Card is like your ticket to the examination hall. Without it, you will not be allowed to take the test.

  • The SSC will release the admit cards online on its website about 2-3 days before the examination date.
  • You will need to log in to the website using your Registration Number and password or date of birth to download your admit card.
  • The admit card will have important information like your name, roll number, photo, signature, exam date, time, and the address of your exam center.
  • Check all the details on the admit card carefully. If there is any mistake, contact the SSC regional office immediately.
  • You must take a printout of the admit card and carry it with you to the exam center.
  • Along with the admit card, you also need to carry an original photo ID proof like an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, or Driving License, and two recent passport-size photographs.

Preparation Tips

  1. First, carefully read the syllabus and exam pattern. Know what to study and how the exam is structured.
  2. Create a study schedule that covers all subjects. Give more time to subjects you find difficult. Study every day.
  3. For General Awareness and English, read an English newspaper daily. This will improve your knowledge of current events and your vocabulary.
  4. Maths requires a lot of practice. Solve problems every day to improve your speed and accuracy.
  5. Find and solve question papers from previous years. This will help you understand the types of questions asked.
  6. Take online mock tests regularly. This gives you the feel of a real exam and helps you manage your time better.
  7. Clear your basic concepts for all subjects, especially Maths and English grammar.
  8. Make short notes of important formulas, dates, and facts. This helps in quick revision.
  9. Revision is very important. Keep revising what you have studied so you don't forget it.
  10. Eat good food, get enough sleep, and do some exercise. A healthy mind lives in a healthy body.
