SSC CGL Inspector (Central Excise) in CBIC : Eligibility Criteria

To apply for the Inspector (Central Excise) post, you must meet certain conditions. 

Educational Qualification

The educational qualification needed is:

  • You must have a Bachelor's Degree from a recognized university or an equivalent qualification.
  • Students who are in the final year of their graduation can also apply, but they must complete their degree and get their results by this cutoff date.

Age Limit

  • The age limit for the Inspector (Central Excise) post is 18 to 30 years 

The government gives some relaxation in the upper age limit for certain categories. The details are below:

Applying for the exam is an easy online process.

Application Fee

  • The application fee is ₹100 (One Hundred Rupees only).
  • No fee is required for Women candidates, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Ex-Servicemen (ESM).
  • The fee can be paid online using BHIM UPI, Net Banking, or Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, RuPay Debit cards.

How to Apply

  1. One-Time Registration (OTR): Before you apply, you must complete your OTR on the new SSC website: https://ssc.gov.in. This is a one-time process. If you have registered on the old SSC website, you still need to create a new OTR on the new website.
  2. Fill the Application Form: After OTR, log in with your registration number and password. Click on the "Apply" link for the "Combined Graduate Level Examination".
  3. Capture Live Photograph: The new application process requires you to capture a live photograph using your computer's webcam or your smartphone. You should not wear a cap, mask, or glasses while taking the photo. Make sure the background is plain and there is good light.
  4. Upload Signature: You need to upload a scanned copy of your signature in JPEG/JPG format, with a size between 10 to 20 KB.
  5. Submit the Form: Preview your application before final submission.
  6. Pay the Fee: If you are not in an excluded category, pay the application fee online.
  7. Print Application: After submission, take a printout of your application form for your records.

The post of Inspector (Central Excise) comes with a good salary package.

  • Pay Level: The post is in Pay Level-7 of the 7th Pay Commission.
  • Pay Scale: The pay scale is ₹44,900 to ₹1,42,400.

Break down of salary:

  • Basic Pay: ₹44,900 per month.
  • Allowances: You will also get Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance (TA).
  • Gross Salary: The total monthly salary at the beginning will be around ₹70,000 to ₹80,000, depending on your posting location.

The selection process for the Inspector (Central Excise) post has multiple stages:

  1. Tier-I Examination: This is a computer-based exam that is qualifying in nature. You need to clear the cutoff to be eligible for Tier-II.

SSC CGL Inspector (Central Excise) in CBIC : Syllabus

Tier-I 

  • General Intelligence & Reasoning: Includes questions on analogies, classification, coding-decoding, syllogism, number series, problem-solving, etc..
  • General Awareness: Questions on current events, India and its neighboring countries, history, culture, geography, economic scene, and scientific research.
  • Quantitative Aptitude: Topics include percentages, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, time and work, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and data interpretation (bar graphs, pie charts).
  • English Comprehension: Tests your understanding of correct English, vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, and comprehension skills.

Tier-II 

  • Mathematical Abilities: Covers topics like Number Systems, Algebra, Geometry, Mensuration, Trigonometry, and Statistics & Probability .
  • Reasoning and General Intelligence: Similar to Tier-I but with a higher difficulty level. Includes topics like semantic analogy, critical thinking, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence.
  • English Language and Comprehension: Focuses on vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms, active/passive voice, direct/indirect narration, and comprehension passages.
  • General Awareness: Similar to the Tier-I syllabus, with a focus on current affairs and in-depth knowledge of history, culture, geography, etc.
  • Computer Knowledge Test: Includes basics of computer organization, CPU, input/output devices, software (MS Office), working with the internet and e-mails, and basics of networking and cyber security .

Result

  • The SSC will first release the results for the Tier-I exam. Candidates who clear the cutoff will be eligible for Tier-II.
  • The final merit list will be prepared based on your overall performance in the Tier-II Examination.
  • The final result will be published on the SSC website. Selected candidates will then be nominated to the CBIC department for document verification and physical tests.

Admit Card

The admit card is your entry ticket to the examination hall.

  • The admit card for all stages of the exam will be released online on the websites of their particular SSC Regional Offices.
  • You can usually download it 2-3 days before the exam date.
  • You must bring a printout of the admit card to the exam hall.
  • Along with the admit card, you must carry at least two recent passport-size color photographs and an original valid Photo ID proof (like an Aadhaar Card, Voter ID Card, Driving License, etc.).

Preparation Tips

  1. Make a list of all the topics you need to cover.
  2. Plan your study schedule. Give time to all subjects every day. Give more time to topics you find difficult.
  3. For subjects like Maths and English, focus on clearing your basic concepts. Use standard school textbooks (like NCERTs) for this.
  4. Solve as many questions as you can. This will improve your speed and accuracy.
  5. Take mock tests regularly. This will help you understand the exam pattern, manage your time, and identify your weak areas.
  6. Read newspapers and monthly current affairs magazines daily to score well in the General Awareness section.
  7. Solve previous years' question papers to understand the type of questions asked in the exam.
  8. Since the Inspector post has physical requirements, take care of your health. Engage in light exercise, running, or cycling to stay fit.
