Introduction

The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) Section Controller Exam is an important test conducted by the Ministry of Railways, Government of India. It is held to hire Section Controllers for different railway zones. A Section Controller’s main job is to keep train traffic safe and smooth by managing signals and controlling the movement of trains on specific railway routes.

Many graduates apply for this exam because it offers a stable and respected job in the Indian Railways. In 2025, the selection process includes a Computer Based Test (CBT), a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT), document verification, and a medical check-up to see if candidates are fit for the job. There are a total of 368 job openings in different railway zones. RRB Section Controller Examination : Eligibility

Educational Qualification

  • The candidate must hold a Graduate Degree or its equivalent from a recognized university or institution.
  • Candidates awaiting results of the final qualifying examination are not eligible to apply.

Age Limit

  • The candidate's age must be between 20 to 33 years as on 01 January 2026.
  • Date of birth for general (UR) category: 02.01.1990 to 01.01.2006.

No relaxation is allowed for candidates applying against unreserved vacancies except for political reservations.

RRB Section Controller Examination : Application Fee and Process

  • Fees:
    • General candidates: ₹500 (₹400 refundable after CBT).
    • SC/ST, Female, Ex-SM, Minorities, EBC, PwBD candidates: ₹250 (fully refundable after CBT).     
    •  Payment is accepted only online via net banking, credit/debit cards, or UPI. 
    •  One application per candidate is allowed for one RRB only.
    • Applications must be submitted via the official RRB websites from 15 September to 14 October 2025.      
    • Modifications in applications can be made during 17-26 October 2025 by paying a non-refundable fee of ₹250 per         change.

RRB Section Controller Examination : Salary

  • The post is placed at Level 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix.
  • Initial basic pay is ₹35,400/- per month.
  • Additional allowances and benefits as per Indian Railways rules.
  • During training, a stipend is provided.

RRB Section Controller Examination : Selection Process

  1. Computer Based Test (CBT): Screening test with objective questions.
  2. Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): For candidates shortlisted from CBT.
  3. Document Verification (DV): Verification of eligibility documents.
  4. Medical Examination: As per Indian Railway medical standards.

Selection is based on merit from these stages. Negative marking is implemented in CBT (1/3rd of marks deducted for each wrong answer).

RRB Section Controller Examination : Physical Standards

  • Medical Standard: A-2 as per Indian Railway Medical Manual.
  • Vision: Distant Vision 6/9 and Near Vision Sn 0.6, with no color blindness or night vision defects.
  • No fogging test required.
  • Candidates who underwent refractive surgery (LASIK) are ineligible.
  • Must pass tests for binocular vision and myopia.

RRB Section Controller Examination : Physical Efficiency Test

  • No separate physical efficiency test is mentioned exclusively for Section Controllers.
  • Medical fitness as per A-2 standard is mandatory.

 

Syllabus

Computer Based Test (CBT)

  • Analytical and Mathematical Ability: Number Systems, Percentages, Profit & Loss, Time-Speed-Distance, Geometry, Algebra, Statistics.
  • Mental Reasoning: Analogies, Series Completion, Coding-Decoding, Ranking, Arrangements.
  • Reading Comprehension: Passages from diverse subjects including History, Literature, Science, with questions on main idea, inference, and vocabulary.
  •  Logical Capability : Logical Reasoning , Binary Logic, Syllogism, Clocks & Calendars, Assumptions, Blood Relations, Family Tree, Solving logic-based puzzles.
    Reading Comprehension: Reading Comprehension Passages would be given from any subjects on History, Society, Literature, Science. Environment, Abstract, Mythology, Technology and Culture and the candidate would be required to understand and answer questions on the –
    Main idea,
    Supporting idea,
    Application,
    Logical Structure &
    Style of the given Paragraph.

Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

  • Tests on concentration, memory, spatial orientation, and observation relevant to railway safety jobs.

RRB Section Controller Examination : Result

  • CBT and final merit lists will be published on official RRB websites.
  • Shortlisting for CBAT is 8 times the vacancies based on CBT merit.
  • Candidates qualifying CBAT and ranking in combined merit (70% CBT + 30% CBAT) are shortlisted for document verification.
  • Appointment depends on medical fitness and document verification.

 

RRB Section Controller Examination : Admit Card

  • Admit cards will be available for download on respective RRB websites approximately 4 days prior to CBT/CBAT.
  • Candidates must carry the admit card and one valid photo ID to the exam center.
  • No admit cards will be sent by post.
  • Exam center details mentioned in e-call letters are final and non-changeable.
