The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) conducts the RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) 12th Level Recruitment to select candidates for various non-technical positions in the Indian Railways. This recruitment is aimed at candidates who have completed their 10+2 (Intermediate) education and  are aspiring to build a stable government career.

The posts under the 12th-level category include Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper, and Trains Clerk, among others. The selection process generally consists of stages such as CBT (Computer Based Test), Typing Skill Test (if applicable), Document Verification, and Medical Examination. Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to apply, you must meet two main conditions: Educational Qualification and Age Limit

Educational Qualification

You must have the following qualifications on or before the closing date for applications (November 27, 2025):

  • Basic Qualification: You must have passed the 12th (+2 Stage) or its equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.
  • Marks Requirement: You must have at least 50% marks in your 12th standard (or equivalent).
  • Exceptions to 50% Rule: This 50% marks rule is NOT required for candidates from SC, ST, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and Ex-Servicemen (ExSM) categories.
  • Higher Qualification: If you have a qualification higher than 12th (like a graduate degree from a recognized university), the 50% marks rule also does not apply to you.
  • Awaiting Results: If you are still waiting for your final 12th-grade results, you are NOT eligible to apply. You must have already passed and have your results by the closing date.
  • Post-Specific Qualification:
    • For Accounts Clerk cum Typist & Junior Clerk Cum Typist: You must also have Typing proficiency in English or Hindi on a computer. This will be tested.
    • For Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk & Trains Clerk: No typing skill is required for these posts.
Age Limit

Your age will be calculated as of January 1, 2026. This is the cut-off date.

  • Standard Age Group: You must be between 18 and 30 years old.

This means your date of birth must be between:

  • Born after: January 1, 2008 (You cannot be younger than 18)
  • Born before (for UR/EWS): January 2, 1996 (You cannot be older than 30)
Age Relaxation

The government provides relaxation in the upper age limit (30 years) for reserved categories, as per the rules. This relaxation is applied to the upper age limit only.

Application Fee and Process

Application Fee
  • For All Candidates (General / OBC / EWS):
    • Fee: ₹500
    • Refund: ₹400 will be refunded to your bank account after you appear for the 1st Stage CBT exam.
  • For SC, ST, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD, Female, Transgender, Minorities, and Economically Backward Class (EBC) candidates:
    • Fee: ₹250
    • Refund: The entire ₹250 will be refunded to your bank account after you appear for the 1st Stage CBT exam.

Note: If you do not attend the first exam (CBT-1), you will not get any refund. The refund is processed to the bank account from which the payment was made.

How to Apply 

You can only apply online. There are no paper forms or offline methods. 

  1. Create an Account:
    • Go to any official RRB website (e.g., rrbahmedabad.gov.in, rrbchennai.gov.in, etc.).
    • You must first "Create an Account." If you have already created an account for any previous RRB recruitment (like ALP or Technician), you should use the same account.
    • You will need a valid personal mobile number and email ID. All communication (like OTPs) will be sent to these, so ensure they are active and will remain active.
    • Important: You can never change the details in your "Create an Account" form (like your name, parents' names, date of birth). Be extremely careful and enter these details exactly as they appear on your 10th-grade certificate.
  2. Authenticate Your Identity:
    • The RRB strongly advises you to authenticate your identity using Aadhaar or DigiLocker. This will make the verification process at exam centers much smoother and faster.
  3. Fill the Application Form:
    • Log in and fill in all your details, such as your communication address, your 12th-grade marks, and your category (SC/ST/OBC, etc.).
    • You must choose only one RRB (e.g., RRB Mumbai).
    • You will also be asked to set your preference for the posts (e.g., 1st choice: Commercial Clerk, 2nd choice: Trains Clerk, etc.).
  4. Live Photo Capture:
    • This is a very important new rule. You do not upload an old photo.
    • The application website will ask you to capture a live photograph of yourself using your computer's webcam or your mobile phone's front camera.
    • Rules for the photo:
      • Look straight at the camera.
      • Stand against a plain, preferably white, background.
      • Do not wear a cap, mask, or any glasses/spectacles (even clear glasses).
      • Your face must be clearly visible.
    • Do not try to take a picture of an existing photo; this will get your application rejected.
  5. Upload Documents:
    • You only need to upload two things:
      • Your Signature: Scanned, in running handwriting (not capital letters), on white paper with a black pen. (File size: 30 KB to 49 KB).
      • SC/ST Certificate (PDF): This is only if you are an SC/ST candidate and want to get the free train travel pass for the exam.
      • OBC and EWS Certificates:  These certificates are valid if they are made between 01 April 2025 to 27 November 2025.
  6. Pay the Fee:
    • You must pay the fee online using internet banking, debit/credit cards, or UPI. Ensure the payment is successful and you get a confirmation.
  7. Submit and Print:
    • After payment, submit your application and save a printout of the final application form for your records.

Salary

The salary for these posts is based on the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC). The "Initial Pay" listed below is the basic amount you start with. It's important to remember that your total monthly salary (in-hand) will be higher. This is because it will also include Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and other allowances as per railway rules, which are added to the basic pay.

Selection Process

Your selection is based purely on your merit, which is determined by your exam scores. The process has multiple stages. 

  1. 1st Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-1): This is a screening exam that everyone must take. It's a qualifying test. You must pass this to be eligible for the next stage. The marks from this exam are not used for the final merit list.
  2. 2nd Stage Computer Based Test (CBT-2): The marks from this exam are used to create the final merit list. This is the most important exam, and your main focus should be on scoring as high as possible here.
  3. Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST): This test is only for candidates who apply for Accounts Clerk cum Typist and Junior Clerk Cum Typist. This test is qualifying in nature, which means you only need to pass it. The marks are not added to your final score, but if you fail this test, you will be out of the running for these posts.
  4. Document Verification (DV): Candidates who pass CBT-2 (and the typing test, if applicable) will be called for DV. They will check all your original certificates (12th marksheet, caste certificate, ID proof, etc.) to verify your eligibility.
  5. Medical Examination: After DV, you must pass a medical fitness test conducted by the Railway Administration. It is crucial to check the medical standards for the posts you are applying for.
Physical & Medical Standards

There is no Physical Efficiency Test (PET) like running or jumping for these posts. However, you must pass a strict Medical Fitness Test. Different posts have different medical standards, especially for eyesight.

  • A-3 Standard (For Trains Clerk):
    • Vision: 6/9, 6/9 (with or without glasses). The power of lenses must not be more than 2D.
    • Near vision must be 0.6, 0.6.
    • Must pass tests for Colour Vision, Binocular Vision, Night Vision, and Myopic Vision.
    • Candidates who have had LASIK surgery are not eligible for this post.
  • B-2 Standard (For Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk):
    • Vision: 6/9, 6/12 (with or without glasses). The power of lenses must not be more than 4D.
    • Near vision must be 0.6, 0.6.
    • Must pass a test for Field of Vision.
    • Note: LASIK surgery is allowed for this post, subject to certain conditions.
  • C-2 Standard (For Accounts Clerk & Junior Clerk):
    • Vision: 6/12, nil (with or without glasses).
    • Near vision must be 0.6.
    • Note: LASIK surgery is allowed for this post.

Exam Pattern

Negative Marking: For every wrong answer, 1/3rd of a mark will be deducted.

1st Stage CBT (CBT-1)

This is a common exam for all posts. It is only for screening. The marks are normalized to account for differences in difficulty across various shifts.

Computer Based Typing Skill Test (CBTST)

This is only for the posts of Junior Clerk cum Typist and Accounts Clerk cum Typist.

  • Nature: Qualifying (you just need to pass).
  • Speed Required: You must be able to type 30 words per minute (WPM) in English OR 25 WPM in Hindi. You choose the language.
  • Fonts: For Hindi typing, Kruti Dev and Mangal fonts will be available.
  • No Editing: You must type on a computer without using spell-check or editing tools.

Result

  • The results for all stages (CBT-1, CBT-2, etc.) will be published on the official RRB websites.
  • How Merit List is Made:
    • For Commercial Clerk & Trains Clerk: Your rank is based only on your score in the 2nd Stage CBT (CBT-2).
    • For Accounts Clerk & Junior Clerk: You must first pass the Typing Test. If you pass, your rank is then decided based on your score in the 2nd Stage CBT (CBT-2).
  • Tie-Breaker: If two candidates get the same marks, the older candidate will be given the higher rank. If the age is also the same, the alphabetical order (A to Z) of their names will be used to break the tie.
  • Final Selection: After you pass the CBT-2, (and typing test, if needed), Document Verification, and Medical Exam, the RRB will recommend your name to the Railway Administration, which will then issue your final appointment letter.

Admit Card 

You will not receive your admit card by post. You must download it from the official website.

  • How to Download: From the official RRB website you applied to.
  • When:
    1. Exam City & Date: You will be told your exam city and date about 10 days before the exam. This is just an intimation so you can make travel plans.
    2. Download E-Call Letter: You can download your actual admit card (E-Call Letter) only 4 days before your exam date.
  • What to Bring to Exam Hall: You must bring these three things:
    1. Your printed E-Call Letter.
    2. An original valid Photo ID card (like Aadhaar Card, PAN Card, Voter ID, Driving License, or Passport). Photocopies, phone images, or digital copies will not be allowed.
    3. A recent passport-size color photograph (the same one used in the application is preferred).

Preparation Tips

  1. Know the Syllabus Inside-Out: Print the syllabus given above and use it as your checklist. This is your most important document. 
  2. Focus on General Awareness: This section has the most questions in both CBT-1 (40) and CBT-2 (50). Read newspapers daily and follow a good current affairs magazine.
  3. Master the Basics: For Maths and Reasoning, focus on clearing your basic concepts from 8th to 10th-grade books (like NCERT). Speed and accuracy are key. Practice daily.
  4. Start Typing: Start practicing typing for at least 30 minutes every day. Reaching 30 WPM with accuracy takes consistent practice over weeks and months.
  5. Take Mock Tests: Take mock tests, and others, to understand the online exam format, manage your time effectively, and identify your weak areas.
