The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) and Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) have launched four significant recruitment drives under the Indian Railways, offering a gateway to stable and prestigious careers with one of the world’s largest employers. These drives include Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC) Undergraduate posts, Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP), Junior Engineer (JE), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS), Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA), and Supervisors (Research), and various Group D posts in Level 1 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CPC). These centralized employment notices collectively offer over 33,000 vacancies across diverse roles, catering to candidates with varied educational backgrounds and career aspirations.

RRB NTPC Recruitment 2024

The undergraduate-level NTPC posts, include Commercial Cum Ticket Clerk, Accounts Clerk Cum Typist, Trains Clerk, and Junior Clerk Cum Typist, with 3,445 vacancies across Zonal Railways and Production Units. These roles, under Level 2 and 3 of the 7th CPC, offer initial pay between Rs. 19,900 and Rs. 21,700, making them ideal for candidates with a 12th-grade qualification.

 

Key Details of NTPC Undergraduate Level Recruitment

  • Application Window: September 21, 2024, to October 20, 2024 (23:59 hrs).
  • Eligibility: Candidates aged 18 to 36 years (as of January 1, 2025) with Graduation or equivalent qualification. Age relaxations of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and additional relaxations for EWS, Ex-Servicemen, and PwBD candidates.
  • Vacancies: RRB (Railway Recruitment Board ) offered 3,445 vacancies  for undergraduate students by RRB NTPC under graduate exam 2024
  • Medical Standards: Requires A3,  B2 and C2 medical fitness to ensure suitability for railway duties.

Key Details of NTPC Graduate Level Recruitment

  • Application Window: September 14, 2024, to October 13 , 2024 (23:59 hrs).
  • Eligibility: Candidates aged 18 to 33 years (as of January 1, 2025) with a 12th (+2 stage) or equivalent qualification. Age relaxations of 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), and additional relaxations for EWS, Ex-Servicemen, and PwBD candidates.
  • Vacancies: RRB (Railway Recruitment Board ) offered 8113 vacancies  for undergraduate students by RRB NTPC under graduate exam 2024
  • Medical Standards: Requires A2,  B2 and C2 medical fitness to ensure suitability for railway duties.

NTPC Selection Process

The selection process includes:

  1. 1st Stage Computer-Based Test (CBT): Tests Mathematics, General Intelligence and Reasoning, and General Awareness (10th-grade level), with negative marking (1/3rd marks deducted per wrong answer).
  2. 2nd Stage CBT: A more comprehensive test covering similar subjects.
  3. Typing Skill Test (TST): For clerical posts, requiring 30 WPM in English or 25 WPM in Hindi. PwBD candidates with specific disabilities may be exempt.
  4. Document Verification (DV) and Medical Examination: Verifies eligibility and medical fitness.

RRB ALP Recruitment 2025

This focuses on recruiting Assistant Loco Pilots (ALP), a critical role in train operations, with 9,970 vacancies. This position, under Level 2 of the 7th CPC, offers an initial pay of Rs. 19,900 and requires stringent A1 medical standards, particularly for vision, due to its operational demands.

  • Eligibility: Candidates aged 18 to 30 years (as of July 1, 2025), with relaxations (5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL). Educational qualifications include:
    • Matriculation/SSLC + ITI in trades like Fitter, Electrician, or Electronics Mechanic, or
    • Course Completed Act Apprenticeship in specified trades, or
    • Three-year Diploma in Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics/Automobile Engineering (or a Degree in these disciplines).
  • Vacancies: Includes 967 in Secunderabad, 928 in Bhubaneswar, and 679 in Ajmer. Reservations apply for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, and Ex-Servicemen.
  • Medical Standards: A1 standard mandates 6/6, 6/6 vision without glasses, normal color vision, and no LASIK surgeries.

ALP Application Process

Applications are submitted online through a single RRB, with fees mirroring NTPC: Rs. 500 for general candidates (Rs. 400 refunded post-CBT-1) and Rs. 250 for reserved categories (fully refundable). A 30-49 KB JPEG signature and recent photograph (not older than 2 months) are required, along with OTP verification. Modifications cost Rs. 250, with additional fees for community changes (e.g., SC/ST to UR).

ALP Selection Process

The process includes:

  1. 1st Stage CBT: A 60-minute, 75-question test (Mathematics, Mental Ability, General Science, General Awareness), with negative marking of one third and minimum pass percentages (40% UR/EWS, 30% OBC/SC, 25% ST).
  2. 2nd Stage CBT: Comprises Part A (Mathematics, General Intelligence, Basic Science, Engineering) , 90 minutes and  100 questions and Part B (trade-specific, 35% minimum to qualify), 60 minutes and 75 questions . Part A determines merit.
  3. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT): Tests ALP-specific aptitude, in English and Hindi.
  4. Document Verification and Medical Examination: Requires an eye specialist certificate and LASIK self-declaration.

RRB JE Recruitment 2024

This recruitment is for Junior Engineer (JE), Depot Material Superintendent (DMS), Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant (CMA), and Chemical/Metallurgical Supervisor (Research), offering 7,951 vacancies across departments like Engineering, Mechanical, Electrical, and Stores. These roles, under Level 6 and 7 of the 7th CPC, provide an initial pay of Rs. 35,400, appealing to candidates with technical qualifications.

Key Details of JE Recruitment

  • Application Window: July 30, 2024, to August 29, 2024 (23:59 hrs).
  • Eligibility: Candidates aged 18 to 36 years (as of January 1, 2025), with relaxations (e.g., 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL, up to 5 years for Ex-Servicemen, 10 years for PwBD-UR). Educational qualifications include:
    • Three-year Diploma in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, or allied engineering disciplines, or B.Sc. in Civil Engineering (for specific JE posts), or
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Science with Physics and Chemistry (for CMA and Supervisors, with 45% marks).
  • Vacancies: Spread across RRBs, with significant allocations like 590 in SCR and 397 in SWR. Reservations apply for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, Ex-Servicemen, and PwBD (e.g., Visually Impaired, Hearing Impaired, Locomotor Disability).
  • Medical Standards: Vary by post (A3, B1, C1), with A3 prohibiting LASIK surgery. 

 

JE Application Process

Candidates apply online through one RRB, with fees of Rs. 500 for general candidates (Rs. 250 refunded post-CBT-1) and Rs. 250 for reserved categories (fully refundable). A 30-70 KB JPEG photograph and signature are required, with OTP verification. Modifications cost Rs. 250, plus Rs. 250 for community changes (e.g., SC/ST to UR). Candidates must specify post and railway preferences, as non-opted posts are not considered.

JE Selection Process

The process includes:

  1. 1st Stage CBT: 90-minute, 100-question test (Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, General Science, 10th-grade CBSE syllabus), with negative marking of one third  and minimum pass marks (40% UR/EWS, 30% OBC/SC, 25% ST, relaxed by 2% for PwBD).
  2. 2nd Stage CBT: 120-minute, 150-question test (General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Computer Applications, Technical Abilities per Exam Group), with a virtual calculator.
  3. Document Verification and Medical Examination: Verifies educational qualifications, age, caste, and medical fitness. Candidates need original certificates.

RRB Group D Recruitment 2024-2025

This targets various Level 1 posts under the 7th CPC, such as Track Maintainer Grade-IV, Helper/Assistant, and Pointsman, with approximately 32,438 vacancies across Zonal Railways (e.g., Western Railway, North Western Railway, South Western Railway, East Coast Railway, South East Central Railway, North Eastern Railway, Eastern Railway, Central Railway, East Central Railway, and North Central Railway). These roles, offering an initial pay of Rs. 18,000, are suitable for candidates with minimal educational qualifications, providing entry-level opportunities in railway operations and maintenance.

Key Details of Group D Recruitment

  • Application Window: January 23, 2025, to February 22, 2025 (23:59 hrs), with modifications allowed from February 25 to March 6, 2025.
  • Eligibility: Candidates aged 18 to 36 years (as of January 1, 2025), with relaxations (5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC-NCL, up to 5 years for Ex-Servicemen, 10 years for PwBD-UR). Educational qualifications include:
    • 10th pass (or equivalent), or
    • ITI from institutions recognized by NCVT/SCVT, or
    • National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) granted by NCVT for Course Completed Act Apprentices (CCAA).
  • Vacancies: Total Vacancies: 32438, covering railways like Mumbai, Jaipur, Hubli, Bhubaneswar, Bilaspur, Gorakhpur, Kolkata, and Prayagraj. Reservations apply for SC, ST, OBC-NCL, EWS, Ex-Servicemen, and PwBD (e.g., Blindness/Low Vision, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, Locomotor Disability).
  • Medical Standards: Vary by post (A2, B1, C1), with specific requirements for vision and physical fitness. Candidates found medically unsuitable for opted posts receive no alternative appointment.

Group D Application Process

Candidates apply online through a single RRB/RRC website, with fees of Rs. 500 for general candidates (Rs. 250 refunded post-CBT) and Rs. 250 for SC/ST/PwBD/Female/Transgender/Ex-Servicemen/Minority/EBC candidates (fully refundable post-CBT). Required documents include a 50-100 KB JPEG photograph (color, against a plain white background, without dark glasses or cap) and a 30-50 KB JPEG signature (in running handwriting, not block letters, 300 DPI, 50mm x 20mm or 140 x 60 pixels). OTP-based verification is mandatory. Modifications cost Rs. 250, and multiple applications to the same or different RRBs lead to rejection and potential lifetime debarment.

Group D Selection Process

The process includes:

  1. Computer-Based Test (CBT): A 90-minute, 100-question test (General Science, Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness, 10th-grade CBSE syllabus), with negative marking (1/3rd marks deducted per wrong answer) and minimum pass marks (40% UR/EWS, 30% OBC/SC, 25% ST, relaxed by 2% for PwBD).
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): Mandatory for all candidates (except PwBD), testing physical capabilities (e.g., lifting and carrying 35 kg for 100 meters in 2 minutes for males, 20 kg for females, without putting the weight down, and  running 1,000 meters in specified times).
  3. Document Verification and Medical Examination: Verifies educational qualifications, age, caste, and medical fitness. Pregnant female candidates are declared temporarily unfit until post-confinement, with their vacancy reserved.

The results for each stage of the recruitment process are declared on the official websites of the RRBs and Railway Recruitment Cells (RRCs) for later stages like the Physical Efficiency Test (PET) and Document Verification (DV). Shortlisted candidates are also informed through their registered email and mobile number.

To check your result, follow these general steps:

  1. Visit the official website of the RRB or RRC handling your recruitment.
  2. Find and click on the "Results" section or the link corresponding to your Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) number.
  3. The result is usually provided as a PDF file containing the roll numbers or registration numbers of the qualified candidates.
  4. Search for your number in the list to see if you have been shortlisted for the next stage.

Admit Card

The Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) issue an electronic call letter (e-Call Letter) to eligible candidates; no physical admit card is sent by post. You'll typically receive an SMS and email notification when the admit card is available. The city and date of your examination are usually announced about 10 days in advance , while the e-Call Letter itself can be downloaded about four days before the exam date.

To download your e-Call Letter follow these steps:

  1. Visit the official website of the RRB you applied to.
  2. Click on the link to download the e-Call Letter for the specific examination.
  3. Enter your Registration Number, Date of Birth, and any other required details to log in and download the document.
  4. Print a clear copy of the e-Call Letter. You must bring this printout, a valid original photo ID, and a recent passport-size color photograph (the same one uploaded during application) to the examination center.

Preparation Tips

  1. Understand the Syllabus: NTPC and Group D focus on 10th-grade Mathematics, Reasoning, General Awareness, and General Science. ALP adds Basic Science and trade-specific knowledge. JE includes technical subjects per Exam Group (e.g., Civil, Mechanical, Electrical).
  2. Practice CBTs: Use mock tests to master the computer-based format and manage negative marking.
  3. Typing Skills (NTPC): Practice for TST (30 WPM English/25 WPM Hindi).
